BTC-USDT perpetual futures
Position size calculator
Work out how many USDT to enter a Bitcoin futures trade with: from a percentage of your account or from where you put your stop.
Fees and slippage are not included: your actual loss can be a little higher.
How it's calculated
By % of account: entry = balance × percentage. Position size = entry × leverage.
By stop distance: risk = balance × percentage you risk. Stop distance = |entry − stop| ÷ entry. Position size = risk ÷ distance. Margin = size ÷ leverage.
Example
With a 1,000 USDT balance, risking 1%, entry at 60,000 and stop at 59,400: the risk is 10 USDT and the stop distance is 1%, so the position is 1,000 USDT (about 0.0167 BTC). At 5x leverage you need 200 USDT of margin. If the stop is hit you lose 10 USDT, plus fees.
Frequently asked questions
What is position size?
It's the total value of the trade in USDT. With leverage it's larger than what you put in from your account: with 100 USDT of margin at 5x, the position is 500 USDT.
Does more leverage mean losing more?
Not if you size by your stop: what you lose when the stop is hit depends on position size and stop distance. Leverage only changes how much margin you lock up. But with high leverage the liquidation price gets closer and can come before your stop, and without a stop you can lose your whole margin.
Cross or isolated margin?
In cross, your whole futures balance backs the trade. In isolated, only the margin you put into it. Whichever you use, always set the stop.
Leveraged futures trading is high risk: you can lose everything you put in. This calculator is a calculation tool, not investment advice.
